Description

MELALEUCA QUINQUENERVIA    “Broad-Leaved Paperbark”       “Niaouli”

Family: Myrtaceae

Sprouting: 14-42 days.

Small, spreading tree to 15-20m high and 5-10m wide with thick, papery, bark in white, grey and beige shades, with cream or white bottle-brush shaped flowers from late spring-autumn. It likes swamps, floodplains, rivers, estuaries, and generally silty soils.  Trees can live for over 100 years and fresh regrowth appears rapidly after fire.

Melaleuca quinquinervia is native to New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, and coastal eastern Australia. It is also known as “niaouli” and used to make essential oils for cleaning, ant1septic, and ant1bacter1al purposes and used anywhere a fresh, clean aroma is required.  The oil has also been known to be used to help with bl@dder infect1ons, resp1ratory troubles and cat@rrh. The steam-dist1lled leaf oil is also used externally for c0lds, c0ughs, rheumat1sm and neuralg1a, and it is widely used by some indigenous Australians to make a tea from the young leaves to treat general s1ckness, c0lds, and he@daches. The nectar has also been used to create a beverage and a honey substitute. The timber is tolerant of being soaked, while the papery bark can be used for wrapping baked food and lining ground ovens or making coolamons and shelters.

Can be used for bonsai. It is often used as a street tree or planted in public parks and gardens in Sydney and is excellent as a windbreak, screening tree, and food source for a wide range of b1rd and in$ect species.
