Description

LYCIUM CHINENSE      “Goji Berry”

Family:  Solanaceae

Sprouting: 14-28 days @ 18-22°C in the right conditions

Native to China and lives for 5-8 years. Yields edible red berries, an important traditional Chinese fruit and therapeutic plant, commercially known as Goji Berry.

Narrow leaves on erect, slender stem, purple flowers followed by orange berries.

Adaptable to most well-drained soils in an open sunny position, frost and drought tender. Tolerant to coastal conditions.  Prefers a sheltered sunny spot with good drainage and a wall, trellis, or other structure to climb up and scramble over.

In Chinese medicine a potion made of the bark is used to treat respiratory ailments.  The fruits are very high in vitamin C and antioxidants. They have a sweet and juicy taste similar to plums or cranberries.
