Erect shrub to 3 metres high, but can also grow to 8m tree. Cultivated as an ornamental plant for use in gardens and as a potted plant. Capsules were used as a hop substitute by early settlers. Attractive colours make this ideal for any garden or as an informal hedge or screening shrub to 3 metres. It has narrow green leaves and yellow-green flowers in clusters in Spring, followed by claret coloured fruits in summer. Drought and frost resistant. The more sun these get, the brighter the capsules in Summer.
