BRACHYCHITON POPULNEUS “Kurrajong”
1 scoop (approx. 40 seeds)
Family: Malvaceae
Sprouting: 10-21 days.
Wide spread and popular tree in eastern Australia, in many towns and parishes, it was grown in the churchyards. It is also well known as a handy fodder option for stock during times of drought. It is adaptable to most soils and prefers an open sunny position after sprouting, is drought resistant but frost tender.
With a stout, grey trunk, shiny dark green leaves and small, cream, bell-shaped flowers with a pink, red or purple tinged appearing in spring and summer, Brachychiton Populneus is a small to medium-sized tree that can grow to 20m in height and 5m around.
Kurrajong fibre taken from the stem has been used in twine and netting manufacture. When crushed to a powder, the seeds can be brewed into a coffee substitute or added to bread. The taproot and the gum exudate are also considered tasty and edible by some.
