Description

Leptospermum continentale       'Prickly Tea Tree'

Family: Myrtaceae.

Sprouting: 15-50 days.

Leptospermum from the Greek 'leptos' meaning fine, thin or slender and 'sperma' meaning seed; referring to the narrow seeds of the type species. Continentale refers to its mainland distribution as opposed to its close relative Leptospermum scoparium, which also occurs in Tasmania and New Zealand. Found on Kangaroo Island, Mount Lofty Ranges and the South-east in South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria.

Growing in heathlands and woodlands, usually on well-drained sandy soils, but also around swamps and streams, it is an erect prickly shrub to 2 m high with smooth bark and white flowers. Seeds are non-dormant, viable seed should germinate readily, viability is often around 90%.

"Indigenous uses as provided by the Wathaurung Aboriginal Corporation: The foliage of almost all of the Tea trees are used to make therapeutic tea......... Bundles of leaves are placed quickly on a fire then removed and fashioned into a bed for the patient to lay on when suffering from body aches". © Jan Juc Coast Action 2017 retrieved 21 March 2020
