Austromyrtus Dulcis, “Midgen Berry” or “Midyim”, is native to eastern Australia, particularly in New South Wales and Queensland. Handling a range of soils and climatic conditions, Midgen is an adaptable shrub for a variety of situations, making it a popular modern horticulture choice. While Austromyrtus Dulcis will grow in colder climates, it will appreciate shelter from frost such as growing under a shady tree canopy.
A spreading heathland shrub to 2m tall. The white flowers are followed by white, edible berries covered in dark spots that give the berries a mauve look. Midgen berries are popular traditional ‘bushtucker’, eaten by indigenous Australians and non-indigenous people. The berries are sweet-tasting and aromatic, with a pleasant gingery flavour and are described by some as “melt-in-the-mouth “.
