Description

EUCALYPTUS CAMALDULENSIS      “Red River Gum”

1 scoop: approx 500 seeds and husk

Family: Myrtaceae.

Sprouting: 10-42 days.

Drought and salt tolerant but frost tender, Eucalyptus camaldulensis is common along the Murray-Darling river system and watercourses throughout semi-arid parts of Australia, it is one of the best known of all eucalypts.

A medium sized tree to 40m.  Usually branching not far above the ground, spreading to around 7m, the bark is smooth and white or grey in colour and rough near the trunk. Leaves are blue grey, up to 250 mm long and it’s white flowers appear mainly in late spring and summer.  It adapts to a broad range of soils but would rather a light to heavy soil in an open sunny position with an adequate water supply.

Because the timber is termite-resistant and very durable, it has been used for making bowls, railway sleepers, furniture, fence posts, and in the construction of wharves and bridges.  The resin can be mixed with water to make an antiseptic solution and seeds are edible.
