Description

GAHNIA ASPERA     “Rough Saw-Sedge”

Family: Cyperaceae.

Sprouting: May take up to 18 months to germinate but well worth the wait.

A tussock forming perennial plant, known as ‘rough saw-sedge’ or ‘round sawsedge’, Gahnia Aspera is often seen in moist situations. The long strap like leaves grow to 80 cm long.  It is found in a variety of situations, from rainforest to drier inland areas in New South Wales, Queensland, Malaysia, New Guinea and islands in the Pacific. It is fairly easy to grow and likes a moist position in the garden. It grows in full sun or semi-shade and although it has horticultural appeal in its foliage and nuts, it is not widely grown, as propagation from seed is considered difficult.

“The seeds were used by Aboriginal Australians to make a kind of flour".  (Information from Wikipaedia – retrieved 24Aug2019)
