LOMANDRA SPICATA “Rainforest Mat Rush”
Family: Asparagaceae.
Sprouting: 28-56 days (at 23-25C).
Drought and frost resistant, this is extremely versatile and hardy and will grow almost anywhere. Naturally grows in most types of rainforest's and will accept waterlogged or dry soils and will also grow in containers or pots. Adaptable to most soils and positions but prefers moist soils, including full sun to 90% shade. The pretty flower spikes produce a pleasant perfume on warm summer days.
The plant provided Aboriginal people with seeds which were ground into a flour to make cakes. The tender leaf bases were eaten, and the leaves were dried and woven to make bags and baskets.
