Description

GAHNIA SIEBERIANA     “Red-Fruit Saw-Sedge”

Family: Cyperaceae.

Sprouting: May take up to 18 months to germinate but well worth the wait.

A tussock forming perennial plant to 2m high and approx. 2m around. Naturally preferring clay and sandy soils, it is mostly found along the east coast of Australia from Tasmania to Northern Queensland to an altitude of 1200m.  Usually found in areas that are damp or occasionally flooded, it like to stay moist.

CAUTION: Mature plants have long, strappy leaves that can become sharp along the edges and may cut bare hands.

Not often seen in cultivation as it has been known to be difficult to germinate. Germination may be promoted by applying heat and smoked water, followed by nurturing under summer temperature conditions.
