Description

CAREX FASCICULARIS “Tassel Sedge”

Family: Cyperaceae

Sprouting: 14-80 days.

Carex Fascicularis is an attractive, ornamental sedge that is softer to the touch than it’s cousin: Carex Appressa.  Suitable for ponds, dams, water features and other swampy or wet areas, Carex Fascicularis is usually found along coastal and wetland areas in places with fresh or brackish water, or even drains.  Carex Fascicularis has lime green, weeping, arched foliage up to 1 metre and spreads out to about 1 metre wide also.  Clustered into long drooping heads, the lower heads are female, while the upper tan heads, are male.  Carex Fascicularis flowers in Spring and Summer and does not require pruning.  Preferring full sun or semi-shade, the pendulous tassles of the flowers and seed heads may die off in harsh frosty conditions though Carex Fascicularis will usually reshoot in spring.  It makes a fabulous wetland habitat plant and suits wastewater treatment systems, while also being an attractive cut flower too.  It also will tolerate temporary inundation and may provide a haven for rabbits, frogs, and various insects, and is a butterfly food plant.  The foliage has been used for weaving baskets and similar instruments by mainland Koori groups according to some sources.
