Originates from Persia (modern-day Iran and Iraq). A deciduous shrub or small tree to 10m that has been cultivated as an ornamental and for its edible fruit since ancient times.

About the size of an apple, the fruit bears many seeds, each within a fleshy crimson seed coating, enclosed in a tough, yellowish to deep red rind. High temperatures are essential during the fruiting period to get the best flavour. Prefers a humus rich heavy soil in a moist protected sunny position, drought and frost tender.

Pomegranates are either eaten fresh on their own, in desserts or salads, or used for grenadine syrup.  They make a pretty garnish for meals, desserts, and cocktails too.
