Lactuca sativa 

Extremely well-known. One of oldest, most popular salad vegetables, spread from India in ancient times. Mostly dislikes very hot conditions and will tolerate some shade. Rich well drained soil. Best in near neutral soils. Likes plenty of water. Can also be grown in water.  600-1000 seeds per gram. 

Can be used for salad, sandwiches, cooking, and shredding.
