Widespread in inland districts in mallee scrub and open forests of New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and New Zealand.
Erect shrub to 3 metres high. Cultivated as an ornamental plant for use in gardens and as a potted plant. Capsules were used as a hop substitute by early settlers.
Attractive colours make this ideal for any garden or as an informal hedge or screening shrub to 3 metres. It has narrow green leaves and yellow-green flowers in clusters in spring, followed by claret coloured fruits in summer. Drought and frost resistant.
